Christoph Vogler House Circa 1797
Some history background and amenities.
Built in 1797, this was the first house to be built of brick and stone in Old Salem.

The gunsmith, C. Vogler has his house built by master mason Johann Gottlob Krause whose striking brick work embellishes many of the Salem buildings.

The house features dark glazed headers and a molded brick water course around the base of the first story. There is also a rubbed brick arches over the doors and windows.

The gable ends of the house are decorated with brick laid in the elaborate herringbone pattern. On the south wall, Krause placed his initials “JKG” in contrasting brick.

On the façade of the house,, between two doorways, he placed the letter “W” which was Duesch for “V”.

The Moravian Church loaned Vogler $5000.00 so he could build the house.

Vogler’s trademark was a long gun that he displayed in an upright position beside the shop door. Most folks could not read so this told them his trade. The gun still hangs there today.

In the early 1950’s Old Salem Incorporated was created to preserve the original homes that were remaining.

The house was in dire need of restoration when we bought it. I am happy to say after 10 years it is now in pristine condition and fully restored.
